Aeolian Islands
The Aeolian Islands, of volcanic origin, are considered among the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Thanks to their history and their incredible natural beauty, they represent a magical place that you absolutely must see.
Enchanting places lapped by a wonderful sea, characterized by wild nature and "shaken" by two always active volcanoes , Stromboli and Vulcano .
Called the " seven pearls of the Mediterranean ", these islands enchant with their extraordinary charm.
The seven islands are: Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli with the islet of Strombolicchio, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea with the islets of Basiluzzo, Dattilo and Lisca Bianca.
The seven volcanic islands of the Aeolian Islands became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2000 thanks to their specific nature: the volcanic archipelago represents an important model for the studies of global volcanology.
The Aeolian Islands are considered a real laboratory that has provided opportunities for study since their origins: observed since the eighteenth century, they have provided fundamental information for the training of geologists.
Volcanic activity is monitored by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Catania. However, the site is also noteworthy for its majestic stacks, wonderful beaches, coves and caves, as well as the extraordinary seabed.

Stromboli is the only volcano in Europe and one of the few in the world in permanent eruptive activity. It emerges from the sea with two peaks at a height of 920 m. The crater area is formed by 3 active cones, whose volcanic activity is mainly explosive in nature, with the launch of lapilli and fragments of magma. The lava flows are channeled into a large basin steep towards the sea, called Sciara di Fuoco (It is also possible to go trekking to climb the Stromboli crater). Most of the inhabitants (about 450), called Strombolians, live in the small village of Ficogrande. The island attracted the attention of the international public in 1949 with the film "Stromboli - Land of God" . (Protagonists: Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini).
Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago and has an area of 37.6 sq km. Its coasts are generally high and rocky with stacks and caves. The historic center of Lipari is dominated by the Castle placed on a promontory, the panorama that is offered to visitors is stupendous. The Aeolian Archaeological Museum, on the acropolis in via del Castello, is one of the most interesting of all and with its finds it bears witness to over 5,000 years of civilization on the island. The historic center with its thousand narrow streets offers many opportunities for shopping and tasting the typical cuisine of the islands in one of the characteristic restaurants.
Legend has it that the island is the home of Aeolus, god of the winds. The southernmost island of the archipelago is separated from nearby Lipari by a channel about 1.6 km wide and is made up of 4 volcanoes, one of which is still active. The Levante bay is affected by fumarolic events where the underwater thermal springs (hot waters) and natural mud (sulphurous) have exceptional therapeutic qualities effective for rheumatism, arthropathies and circulatory ailments.
