THE RIACE BRONZES

The Riace bronzes, the warriors who came from the sea.

Less than an hour from our hotel, the Riace Bronzes are kept in the National Museum of Reggio Calabria , two bronze statues that undoubtedly represent one of the highest moments of sculptural production of all time and the most important discovery archaeological site of the last century.

It was August 1972 when a diver  Stefano Mariottini who, during a dive, had seen the two statues partially covered by sand.

He signaled the presence of the statues in the sea, eight meters deep and about 200 meters from the beach of Riace Marina, a small town in the province of Reggio Calabria.

The "B" Statue

also in bronze, it is only one centimeter lower than the first. The structure and position of the body are entirely similar to those of statue A.

The modeling of the head however presents some differences. The skull cap is smooth, not modeled, as if the sculptor had left out the description of the hair because it was covered by a headdress.

The technique and materials used for the eyelashes, eyes and lips are the same as for statue A, however in this case the mouth is closed and the teeth cannot be seen.

The modeling of the beard is extremely accurate, it is characterized by wavy locks.

Inside the right hand, a sort of tin ring suggests that this character also carried a spear, but in a more inclined position.

The support of the shield is always evident on the left forearm.

Over 230,000 visitors

these are the MArRC numbers. "The MArRC is confirmed as a strategic place in Calabria, where it is possible to live many exceptional cultural experiences and where shared memory breathes life, as a precious resource for building a common future of peace and civilization", comments the museum in a note.

IT IS A VISIT THAT WE RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE

The "A" Statue ,

it is a sculpture made of bronze. She is 1.98m tall. It represents a young and strong man, completely naked.

The strong muscles of the chest, back and hips are modeled in an anatomically correct way. On the arms and hands the veins are accurately described. The entire muscular system is toned, taut, immortalized a moment before the contraction.

The details of the head and face are made with extreme accuracy. The hair is long and curly, tied in a band that encircles the forehead. The beard is long and thick, also dense with curls. The forehead is furrowed in a concentrated attitude, the silver eyelashes underline the line of the eyes, the inside of which is made of ivory and glass paste, the copper lips are parted and allow the silver teeth to be seen. The expression is that of a warrior preparing for battle.

The missing elements The investigations carried out during the last restoration revealed furrows on the head which originally indicate the presence of a helmet , worn on top of the head and not yet lowered to cover the face.
Other signs along the right arm and the enlarged position of the index and middle fingers of the relative hand, however, suggest that a spear was resting along the side , left to slide between the two fingers.
On the other hand, there is no doubt about the presence of the shield on the left arm.
